I Come To Shanghai: Beefamids to Album Covers Part 1

On March 8th, I sent a tweet to a Mr. Robert Ashley about the band Wavves. He sent me a reply regarding a video I had done for a good friend Martha Nunez which I will post here:

Robert asked if I would be interested in doing a music video for I Come To Shanghai. I was stoked that he went and watched my ridiculous madness I had posted on youtube and being a big fan of what Robert did on GFW Radio, and A Life Well Wasted. I knew right away that I had to do it. We started talking over email where he sent me an MP3 version of Your Lazy Eye. Generally my stuff is all based on things that I find funny, or are threads of inside jokes from friends.
“We don’t have any inside jokes, really. We like food, like the Dark Side of the Taco image on our site. It might also be fun to play around with the “lazy eye” thing. Really, though, just do your thing.” -Robert
The three of us definitely wanted footage of the band in the video. Sadly none of us have any really fancy camera equipment at all. In fact a majority of the videos I have made have all been with my iSight camera on my computer. This may not be the most professional way of getting footage, but it is cheap and convenient. Sam thankfully had a Macbook, so they went ahead and got the green screen thing figured out. In the meantime I really wanted to give them something to go off of. This video was the first idea I had, animating people with giant eyes for heads, tying it to the Dark Side of the Taco they had mentioned in the email.

Lazy Eyes are a secret pet peeve of mine. When I first moved to Arizona I worked with a woman with one and I always pictured her eyeball popping out, or exploding.

More to come on monday, including my process of storyboards once I got the band footage!
